First Entry
Hello to all in Blog-land! This is the space I'll be posting about my quilting projects, after the first of the new year... gotta get thru a wedding first! My daughter's "formal" wedding is this coming Saturday. They got married on Jan 1st, 2005 at the magistrate's office, so this is the church wedding and celebration with all the family and friends... sure hope the weather cooperates, since most of the guests will be traveling to get here.
So here's a little about me: My name is Rosanne and I live in VA with my wonderful hubby of 23+ years. We have four kids; two sons in the Army, ages 25 and almost 23, a daughter (the above mentioned-one-- she's 20) who's married to an Air Force guy, and another daughter (who turned 20 on Christmas eve!) who now lives about 45 minutes away, and is waitressing for the time being. The girls are 3 months apart; the younger one is adopted from Russia. I'm truly blessed to have such wonderful, talented, terrific kids! I'm trying to adjust to the empty nest. We have a few "fur kids" that keep us entertained; Penelope Poopsalot, aka Penny, is a year old terrier mix. Wiley is my beautiful boy Maine Coon kitty, and Tanya is my sweet, snuggly short-haired domestic kitty. (She's actually my daughter's, but I won't give her up!) We also have an indoor-outdoor kitty who adopted us; she stays in the basement when she does come in...she's afraid of the other cats. Her name is Minoo.
I recently started working again for friends who have a courier business on an as-needed basis. I like the flexibility of this arrangement, and it gives me a little "mad money" to indulge in trips to the fabric store!
I've gotten a little more involved in my quilt guild this year; I'm a member of the block of the month committee. It's been fun selecting the blocks and fabrics for the year. We just finished cutting the focus fabric for the final block for this year (Aug thru July) and have gotten a good response from the members on our selections so far.
I also have a group of quilting friends that gets together once a year (most of them are in NC & SC); hopefully, in the future when more of them are empty nesters, we'll be able to get together more often. We usually do a project with some kind of exchange (blocks, strips, etc) as part of our weekend, and lots of food and chocolate!! Of course the best part is just being together. One of the members of this group is an old friend from when we were in the Air Force. We'd lost touch for many years, and when I found her at Classmates.com, it turned out she had recently moved near Charlotte, NC from TX and better still, she quilts!! This Feb. will be our fifth year; I just wish those weekends didn't go by so fast!!
It took me a while to figure out that I prefer scrap quilts over all others when it comes to making quilts. I don't have the patience for applique', or following directions to a "tee" beyond the cutting. I really appreciate the beauty of perfecty coordinated, precisely pieced quilts, but they just aren't ME!
I'm also really good at starting projects; there are so many things to try!!! Needless to say, my pile of UFO's is pretty big. One of my excuses (remember that one excuse is as good as another!) for not finishing is that I have no sewing room. I use the dining room table, so on the rare occasion that I need to use the table for its intended purpose and have to put my machine away, I might lose interest in the current project. This therefore, might lead to the need to start something new!! It's a theory... and it will soon be a non-excuse; I got new flooring for one of the bedrooms, which will become my sewing room after it's installed.
I actually have several tops done, I'm just stuck as to how to quilt them. I've done a few in the ditch; boring! and Im just insecure enough to not send them out to be quilted....(I took a paper piecing class once, and was "critiqued" by one of those "precise" type of quilters!!). I'm currently looking into home machine quilting frames; that may be what I save up for next. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
